Tired of doing the same things in the same places? Then get moving! Thursday, March 12th, Kid Kameleon, Space Invader & Little John rock the Bay Area's best veggie-oil powered bus for a mobile party. With couches lining the sides and a dance floor in the back this is no ordinary bus and no ordinary bus ride. We stop at 2-3 beautiful outdoor locations in the Bay Area for merriment over the course of a 3.5 hour ride.

Kid Kameleon is part of the legendary crew Surya Dub that has been holding down nights at Club 6 for the last two years. Straight from his web site: "Kid Kameleon is a conduit, fusing beats from past, present and future though his mixes, forging connections between producers, DJs and fans through his events, and linking scenes and styles from across the globe through his words. A high energy performer never at a loss for an unexpected tuneto drop, when the Kid plays he has bartenders dancing on their own bars, lovers doing the bump and grind, smiles on every face and shouts in every throat."

Space Invader is responsible for the Memekast shows that have introduced us to new dope music and kept so many of us bumping our iPods. Expect a slamming mix of glitch, hip hop, electro and dubstep.

Little John is the man behind the legendary Raindance parties. Reprenting the Santa Cruz underground for years his eclectic styles always keep the dancefloor bumping.

To help our friends at The Bus Stop Gallery continue to host us we're tacking a $1 fee on to our tickets that will go straight to them for providing us a wonderful place to meet. That means tickets are $21 and you can buy them through our web site or at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/58841

We meet at The Bus Stop Gallery, 135 Dore Street, Unit C, San Francisco at 8pm for check-in and our bus leaves at 8:30pm. This is a slight change from past rides. We return you to the same spot at Midnight. Our events are 21+ and BYOB

New Site?

Yes, we are proud to be launching Version 3 for 2009! What's new? Well, we're introducing some new features, and will be rolling out a bunch more over time. Some of them are little things; like threaded comments so you can have a conversation instead of leaving just comments, and an updated home page so you can always see what's new and featured. Some are a little more involved; like a 5-star rating system for episodes, and user favorites. You can even stalk your friends, to make sure you always know what they're up to on the site! Of course, you'll have to be logged in to access those features (did we mention user profiles?).

This release is considered a beta release, so if you notice any bugs or have any questions, please reply to this post. We will also be posting some help pages very soon.

Oh, one other thing: we realize that some of you have been waiting for a new Memekast for a while. We apologize for the delay, and promise to make every effort to get you your fix on a regular basis in 2009. We've got some amazing guests lined up and we all really appreciate your support.

Thanks so much for listening - we're glad to be back in action!

The mix is called Bastard Bass, and with it Poirier continues his relentless, electro-fueled assault on the border walls between dancehall, hip-hop, soca, grime, and any others that get in his way. One needs only check out his body of work to know these boundaries don't stand a chance.

His remix credits are deeper still, with official releases for Lady Sovereign (Def Jam, Chocolate Industries London), Maga Bo (Soot Rio De Janeiro), TTC, and SF's own Bassnectar (Om Records, Bassnectar.net); not to mention a ton of boots for the likes of Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, Spank Rock, The Clipse, and on and on.

The album itself, No Ground Under, is set to drop in North America on January 29.

Turns out he’s an extremely prominent figure in the South African music scene. He is a Cape Town turntablist, scratch dj champion and producer who calls himself Sibot. His music is a genius blend of hip hop and electronica. It’s a touch of glitch squeezed out the edges of dope hip hop beats, smoothed out with some master scratching and just dripping with thick, grinding bass lines.

Its also full of jazz and funk and, of course, samples from movies I will never even know exist.

His latest album, In With The Old, can be found on African Dope Records, an independent record label straight outta Cape Town, South Africa. So far, just about everything I’ve heard off the label deserves the given adjective.* Seems like their soundsystem is not made of speakers and cables, but of people instead. The African Dope Soundsystem is a collaboration of Capetown dub, reggae and dancehall DJs, MCs, live and electronic musicians, studio producers and video artists. These musical magicians run the label and fuel the South African music industry with “a fresh hybrid of local and international styles, ranging from dub reggae through to electronic dancehall, all songs featuring original African vocals, tight beats, accoustic musicians, electronic soundscapes and deadly subbass riddims.” Commence dancing now.

Who knew South Africa was putting out such hot shit? Maybe you did, I don’t know. The Bay Area music scene has a lot going on right now too, BUT it’s hard for djs and producers not to get stuck in the “Bay Area sound.” You can really hear the cultural differences in what African Dope is putting out. It’s refreshing, to say the least. I am particularly attracted to Sibot because he puts out that melodic, samply, organic and electronic mix of hip hop that I love for many of the same reasons I love Blockhead, Wax Tailor and Troublemakers. I also share a lot of influences with him, highest among them Ninja Tune and Nintendo. As far as I’ve heard, the label is mostly dub step and dancehall, and if you are a regular listener you know how much we love those beats. If you are not, give in to some our hottest resonant frequencies, tuned, amplified and banged the fuck out by guest selectors like Genji, Cumulus, and of course our own resident Dj Spaceinvader.

And after you have finished with those, check out what's new on African Dope. You won't be sitting still for long.

*And just in case you were wondering, the word dope is actually Dutch in origin. Given that the Dutch actually founded Cape Town, these guys really lay claim to the term in more ways than with their beats!

Ok, we don't have monster trucks, but we do have the Camo Bus! So let me help you plan your Sunday.
Do not be alarmed, we are not really providing travel deals, or holistic therapy, or any of the other random things claimed by the page that took over mk2systems.com briefly yesterday. There was just some confusion over who holds the site registration and the actual registrar thought it would be helpful to advertise such services while we worked it out. Hope you got a great deal on a hotel. We're back now.

Thanks to everyone who notified me, Neuronaut wins for being the first!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled reprogramming, which is already in progress.
