Aw hell naw.

You may have noticed our transmission was hijacked today… Actually we’ve been nagging San Mateo’s Audio1 to put out a new episode of his Pop That Trunk podcast for a while now. But I guess with two club residencies, four net radio shows (two live and two podcasts), and always a party somewhere to be rocked, the man’s been keeping pretty busy.

A veteran of the Bay Area scene, Audio1 got his start in the mid-nineties, establishing himself as one of the nastiest jungle DJ’s on the West Coast with a hands-on style inherited from his roots in hip-hop. His sound has continued to diversify, and these days you can catch him banging out all styles of hip-hop, breaks, funk, and more. One of his many projects is Pop That Trunk, a Hyphy-centric mixtape podcast he started in 2006. Recently he has been shifting his attention to the more diverse Rhymes and Beats podcast (which you should also bookmark immediately). But djspaceinvader wouldn’t leave him the hell alone about doing another Pop That Trunk episode…

I guess he figured if we want it that bad, maybe we should broadcast it. So here it is, a special Pop That Trunk edition of the Memekast - The Definition of Hyphy, courtesy of Audio1!

Nick Argon

As the Memekast resumes broadcasting from the GhettoBox, we brought in Bay Area dubstep champion and Argon label-founder Nick Argon. Started in 1999, the first few releases on Argon Records were drum & bass tunes primarily from San Diego’s Stratus and Static of Australia, with appearances by Profound Noize, Gridlok, and others. With the release of Matty G’s For the Smokers / Bitter Love 12″ in 2006, Argon announced the beginning of a new chapter, focused on the slower, grimier sounds of dubstep.

These days Argon is fast establishing itself as a global leader in dubstep science, with a steady stream of massive releases from artists like SF bad men Matty G and Babylon System, Skynet (whom you may remember from releases alongside Skynet on d&b labels like Renegade Hardware and Moving Shadow), and Finnish rising star Tes La Rok.

For this episode, Nick brings the fiyah with 15 big tunes, including some upcoming Argon releases.

And if you’re in the Bay Area, make damned sure to head down to Club Six on Friday March 28 for the US debut appearance of Tes La Rok. Brought to you by (you guessed it) Argon, the event will also feature 12th Planet (LA), Matty G, Babylon System and Nick Argon. (Facebook event link, Club Six website).
