Friday June 13 - 88 Presents LODA (DC Metro)

For my first operation on Atlantic soil in about 3 years, i’m way stoked to be playing alongside Version Sound at 88 DC’s new event, Loda.

88 is doing big tings in the DC metro area, with forward thinking events that showcase more than just a diverse music lineup (although they certainly hold that down). Integrating multiple forms of sound, visual, and performance art in a very friendly, deeply interactive atmosphere, their events are “breaking down barriers between the normal, everyday population and artist” (88 co-founder David Fogel, quoted in the Washington Times).

Version Sound is THE DC dub soundsystem — “3 Selectors, 1 MC and 1 Space Echo unit.” Niiice. Check out their new mixes, Twiss Up and Be Thankful. Both are heavy duty.

Ghislain Poirier: Bastard Bass Mix

blog, reviews, ,

Ghislain Poirier | No Ground Under Montreal’s Ghislain Poirier, last seen around here on my own memekast mix mk001, has announced his Ninjatune debut, and dropped a serious promo mix to get us ready.

The mix is called Bastard Bass, and with it Poirier continues his relentless, electro-fueled assault on the border walls between dancehall, hip-hop, soca, grime, and any others that get in his way. One needs only check out his body of work to know these boundaries don’t stand a chance. Past collaborations have included eurocrunk posterboys TTC (Big Dada Paris), abstract hip-hop guru Beans (Warp, Antipop Consortium NYC), dj/rupture (Tigerbeat6 NYC), Lotek Hi-fi (Big Dada London), and plenty more. His remix credits are deeper still, with official releases for Lady Sovereign (Def Jam, Chocolate Industries London), Maga Bo (Soot Rio De Janeiro), TTC, and SF’s own Bassnectar (Om Records, Bassnectar.net); not to mention a ton of boots for the likes of Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, Spank Rock, The Clipse, and on and on.

The album itself, No Ground Under, is set to drop in North America on January 29.

Thanks to Cumulus for the heads-up.

Doped Up

blog, reviews, ,

In With the OldWord recently trickled down to me from somewhere along the ant trail about a producer whose beats demanded my prime headphone time. Turns out he’s an extremely prominent figure in the South African music scene. He is a Cape Town turntablist, scratch dj champion and producer who calls himself Sibot. His music is a genius blend of hip hop and electronica. It’s a touch of glitch squeezed out the edges of dope hip hop beats, smoothed out with some master scratching and just dripping with thick, grinding bass lines. (more…)
